How do I create change in my community using a petition?

A petition is one of the most effective ways to turn individual voices into collective action. Start by choosing a focused, specific goal—something you can clearly explain in a sentence or two. Then create your petition using ActionButton, making sure your ask is direct, actionable, and grounded in why the issue matters to your community.

Once your petition is live, share it widely. Post it on your social channels, embed it on your website, and send it to your supporters by email or text. The more visible it is, the more momentum you’ll build. As signatures come in, use that energy to engage supporters further—invite them to attend events, contact decision-makers, or participate in related actions.

Finally, deliver the petition to the people who can make change happen. This could be local officials, school leaders, or organizational decision-makers. Pair the signatures with a clear request for next steps. With a well-crafted petition and a plan for follow-through, you can mobilize your community and drive meaningful change.

Which plan is right for me?
  • The Free plan is great for people who want to gather petition signatures and raise awareness about an issue. It doesn't include actions that are most effective at influencing lawmakers, but it can get you started with a basic petition campaign.
  • The Paid plan is best if you're trying to influence lawmakers or other decision-makers. It includes powerful actions proven to persuade. The Paid plan also allows you to collect user contact information, so you can follow up with your audience, sharing news about the campaign or asking them to take additional actions.
Can I change my plan after signing up?

All users start on the free plan and there is no credit card required to sign up. You can upgrade to our paid plan at any time to access additional features. Paid customers may downgrade from their account profile at any time and any changes are reflected on the next billing cycle.

This button is perfect for lawmakers who aren’t covered by the Contact Your Lawmakers button, or for groups like town councils, school boards, judiciaries, or clergy. How does geo-gating work?

Geo-gating ensures that only real constituents can contact specific elected officials through your Contact Your Lawmakers action. When you set up your button, you choose the states, provinces, or districts you want to allow. Supporters will enter their address as usual—if they live in an approved area, they can send a message to their representative. If not, they’ll see a notice explaining they’re outside the eligible region.

This keeps your outreach focused, strategic, and credible. Lawmakers receive messages only from people they actually represent, which increases the likelihood they’ll pay attention. And while the total number of messages may be smaller, each one carries more weight because it’s coming from a true constituent.

Geo-gating is available on paid plans and is ideal for local, regional, or national campaigns where accurate targeting matters.
